How does the matching work?
Every flag in the list is scored against your picks: each color, pattern, or symbol you select that the flag actually has adds a point. Flags that match everything you picked appear first with an "matches all picks" badge, followed by near misses with a note about what matched. If nothing looks right, remove your least certain pick - stripe count and symbols are the details people misremember most.
I only remember two colors. Is that enough?
Yes - one color is enough to start. Two colors usually narrows the list to a handful of flags. Add the pattern (stripes, cross, triangle) and you are typically down to one or two candidates.
Why do some flags look almost identical?
Some countries genuinely share near-identical flags: Romania and Chad (blue-yellow-red vertical stripes), Indonesia and Monaco, Ireland and Ivory Coast (the same three colors in reverse order). If your shortlist contains a pair like these, the difference is usually in the shade or the order - check which color is on the left or top.
Which flags are included?
All 197: every sovereign state flag in the CIA World Factbook (195 countries), plus Taiwan and Puerto Rico, whose flags people often search for. Each flag's colors, pattern, and symbols were checked against the Factbook's official flag description. State, city, historical, and organizational flags are not included.
What is the only country flag that is not rectangular?
Nepal. Its flag is made of two overlapping triangular pennants (a stylized moon on the upper one, a sun on the lower). Every other national flag is a rectangle or, like Switzerland and Vatican City, a square.
What do the most common flag symbols mean?
Stars appear on about a third of national flags and often stand for states, islands, or ideals. Crescents usually signal an Islamic heritage. Crosses come from Christian history - the off-center Nordic cross links the Scandinavian countries. Coats of arms pack a country's history into one small emblem: eagles, lions, trees, and shields.
